The previous lot, this lot and the next two lots emanate from the Troy Record's newspaper sports reporters that attended the World Series in 1933, 1936, 1937 and 1939. Troy is upstate near Albany, New York. Each lot contains the reporter's Press Pass badge and letter of instructions from the Baseball Writers Association (BWA) which each writer would have received when attending the World Series games each year. Other ephemera like the original envelopes of the instruction packet and other paperwork, article notes and typed memos to fire back to the home office are included in some of the lots. The unique, die cut cardboard press pass badges were created especially for each Series and issued to only officially registered members of the press. While the well known World Series press pins are seen regularly in the hobby, these interesting printed press passes are not seen with any regularity. These four lots present a special opportunity to acquire passes from four World Series in the 1930s featuring the Yankees, Giants, Senators and Reds.

This lot presents with BOTH press pass badges for the 1936 World Series between the New York Yankees and New York Giants for the reporter "Leo Curley" of the upstate New York newspaper, The Troy Record. The orange Polo Grounds badge is punched for Games 1, 2 and 6, and the the Yankee Stadium badge is punched for Games 3, 4 and 5. The Yankees won 4-2. The badges measure 3 1/2 x 3 inches. Also included:

  • BWA New York Chapter instruction letter informing the writer "Press headquarters have been established by the Giants at the Hotel New Yorker and by the Yankees  at the Hotel Commodore." 8 1/2 x 11 inches;
  • Both "Yankee Stadium" and Polo Grounds" press pass envelopes, 11 x 4 3/4 inches;
  • Four Press Scorecards (scored) for Games 3, 4, 5 and 6. 8 1/2 x 14 inches;
  • Two "Western Union Press Message" sheets with reporter's notes. 8 1/2 x 11 inches; and
  • Two "Postal Telegraph-Cable Company Press Telegram" sheets with article concerning the postponement of Game 2 due to rain. The article makes the point that because of the extra day off, the Giant's Carl Hubbell will be able to throw in Game 3 instead of waiting until Game 4. He did, and as in Game 1, Hubbell won. 8 1/2 x 11 inches.

Excellent to Mint condition overall.
