Offered are two examples of the small but very tough 1910 T209-1 Contentnea 1st Series tobacco cards which featured minor league players . The two players are from the 1909 Eastern Carolina League, H.H. Hoffman of the Raleigh, North Carolina “Redbirds” and John Cooper of the Wilson, North Carolina “Tobacconists.” Named after a small creek that runs through North Carolina's tobacco country, Contentnea was a brand from Erwin-Nadal Tobacco Company. The 16 cards in 1910 T209 Contentnea First Series Baseball set are all from that area as well, featuring minor league players from the Carolina Association and Eastern Carolina League, though none from the “Virginia” league as listed on the backs of the cards. It's possible more cards were planned from the Virginia league, which would have possibly given us a few entries from the Petersburg Goobers or the Lynchburg Shoemakers. Although the T209-1 cards were issued in 1910 and 1909, as evidenced by the two players representing their 1909 teams here, the set is traditionally viewed as a 1910 release. Both cards present with moderate to heavy wear, creases and staining. Very Good condition overall.
