Offered is a pair of 1980s match-used Wilson Pro Staff tennis shoes signed by Pete Sampras and customized to resemble “Sergio Tacchini” tennis shoes. In a unique situation for a pro athlete, Sampras began a sponsorship deal with Tacchini in 1989, but was enamored with the feel of the Wilson Pro Staff tennis shoes. He went to great lengths to disguise the Wilsons, as evidenced by the offered pair where the Tacchini logos have been added, Tacchini tagging is added to the tongues, and “Wilson” on the heel is painted over with the “T” Tacchini logo. Upon close inspection, it is obvious that “PRO STAFF” has been ground off the side of each sole, and small patches of leather have been added to the uppers to complete the disguise! One can only imagine the scandal in today's high-def photography social media world if an athlete wore a competing brand of shoe to win a Tennis Major Tournament.
